Bufton-Schrage Teacher Award

Why this award?
Dr. Dan Oren, a former Glendale-River Hills student, wishes to recognize the influence of Phil Bufton and Karen Schrage, two outstanding, now-retired Glendale-River Hills teachers who have made a difference in his life. In their honor he has founded this award to encourage and support current GlendaleRiver Hills teachers to carry on the dedication to creatively engaging students in learning.

Who is eligible?
Nominees must:
  • Be a full-time member of the Glendale-River Hills teaching faculty
  • Hold a current teaching license
  • Have taught in the District for a minimum of three years
  • Not have received this award in the past three years
  • Not be a member of the Selection Committee

What is the award?
Each eligible nominee will receive a certificate in recognition of his/her nomination.

In addition, the award recipient will receive a cash award of $400, and the award certificate.

Award recipients will be announced at the end of school year reception on June 12, 2026.
What are the criteria for selection?
Teachers receiving this recognition are characterized by their dedication to all four items below.
The teacher:
  • Inspires student interest and develops understanding in subject areas taught
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness in teaching strategies and approaches
  • Fostering the development of students’ intellectual, social, and emotional growth
  • Challenges learners across a diverse student population to exceed their own expectations

What is the nomination process?
Nominations must be made and submitted through this Google Form for nomination. All current students, teachers, parents and alumni may submit nominations. Nominations should include a supporting statement, and a telephone number in lieu of a signature.


A selection committee will use the submitted nominations in order to determine award recipients.
